The original brain child, an American eco-developer, started the project in 2007. His vision was to create a unique eco experience elevated above ground surrounded by jungle. The construction and design was specific to withstand earthquakes and land slides making this a one of a kind. All was lost during the 2008 financial crash and the property lay dormant and neglected until 2014 when South African couple, Carlo & Tineka stumbled upon the property and rescued it from the jungle elements.
A huge effort was launched to rescue the property and bring it back to life. During the first year the surrounding jungle was tamed and structures were inspected. In 2016 renovations of the existing buildings and structures started. All plumbing and electrical on the property were redone and 7 jungalows were refurbished.
Arbol Verde Ecolodge opened its doors at the end of December 2017 to welcome our first guests. The property is still being expanded and upgraded with 7 additional units to come, a swimming pool is being planned and there will be a restaurant and spa coming in the near future.
The property is located on a ridge above the village, approximately 110m above sea level, in a quiet neighborhood easily accessible without 4x4 on a cul de sac. The property is surrounded by lush jungle with views of the mountains and some ocean scenery. We are located within 3 km from town center, restaurants, beaches, local mini market and the coastal highway. Within walking distance is a river and a jungle path leading to town center. The neighborhood is great for hiking, cycling and bird watching. A short drive from us is the well know Cascada El Pavon and Playa Tortuga Beach.
Travelers can also use Ojochal as a base for exploring some of the many national parks and reserves scattered throughout the area. At Corcovado National Park, tourists can see an astoundingly diverse array of plants and animals, while Marino Ballena National Park is known for its gorgeous coral reefs and the many whales and dolphins that swim in the waters off the shore.
The property borders lush jungle surroundings with mountain views and glimpses of the ocean in some spots. Well over a hundred trees on property including established fruit trees such as Mango, Avocado, Papaya, Banana, Guanabana, Coconut etc. Beautiful Palms abound and hundreds of low maintenance plants everywhere.
Many large indigenous trees can be found all over the property including a magnificent hundred or more years old Ficus Tree. Some of the trees almost feel like they wrap their arms around the jungalows giving you a sense of living inside a treehouse. The large trees serve as umbrellas and keep the accommodations protected from the sun and considerably cooler.
Many animals make their home here including Iguanas that can be seen hanging out in the trees. Hundreds of birds visit the property daily and there are interesting mammals visiting early mornings and night time. At night the jungle comes to life and animals like sloths and anteaters can be found feeding from the nuts and fruits the trees provide. Howler and Capuchin Monkeys frequently pay their visit here to feed and play in the trees.
There is a seasonal stream bordering the property and draws variety of animals and creatures to visit. A foot path on the property near the stream leads you into the surrounding jungle where you can marvel and the trees, plants and possibly stumble onto some interesting wild life.

This is a unique one of a kind eco-complex of elevated interconnected bungalows looming above the jungle floor, anywhere from 15 to 36 feet. The concept is that of living amongst the animals and trees giving a sense of being in a tree house looking down onto the forest floor and garden in a tranquil shaded setting ideal for watching birds and local wildlife. The interconnected pathways wind through the landscape creating a birds eye view of the property and jungle below.
Creating this second level above ground allows one to get full use of the property and in essence doubling the size of the available space by creating two dimensions to the visitor, one of being elevated in the trees and the other of walking through the jungle with little interference of the structures above. Elevated structures built in Costa Rica typically have the advantages of being eco-friendly, not effected by heavy rainfall and flooding, less effected by problems with mildew and moisture, lower cost maintenance, great for wildlife/bird watching.
INFRASTRUCTURE AND BUILDINGS
There is a total of 14 platforms constructed from solid concrete and rebar cores, interconnected by above ground walkways which are also ‘anchored’ in the ground. Total of 7 rental units have been completed and one unit is being utilized as a Laundry and Kitchen Facility to cater for guests and future group events.
The units have extra large windows and sliding doors to give you a sense of being outside and mosquito mesh to keep out the unwanted bugs. The unique artistic adobe interior gives a sense of being in the jungle and creates a natural feel and look complementing the surrounding environment. There are some interesting water features in the bathroom and the decor reflects that of the forest and animals of Costa Rica.
The 7 empty platforms, although not built on yet will in the future be utilized as open air relaxation, exercise or sitting areas. Plans are to develop an open air restaurant and an open air movie theatre.
The unique one of a kind “reverse pyramid” designed supports and foundations are “anchored” with Ram Jack’s Helical Piles system and developed in North America. A helical foundation (pile) is a factory manufactured steel foundation consisting of a central shaft with one or more helical shaped bearing plates. The system offers secure foundations in expansive clay and variable soil conditions such as what we get in Costa Rica. It also minimizes environmental disturbance. As a helical pier is screwed into the ground, the torque generated by the helical blades provides a direct means of determining soil density, stiffness, and strength.
There are a total of 96 piles installed on the property and driven up to 40ft into the ground to hold the platform and walkway foundations. These solid foundations were built to withstand earthquakes which are prone to Cost Rica such as those endured in 2009 and 2012.
